Questions about not receiving "Announcement" emails

It sounds like some people are reporting not getting one or both of the “Announcement” emails about Ghosts, so I wanted to share a bit more info about how these emails work.

Sometimes people do receive them but they go to “Spam”, “Promotions” or similar folders. That’s kind of it’s own thing and email deliverability is a complicated subject.

But there are also email settings within your forum profile, and there is some nuance if you are checking the forum frequently.

Under “Perferences” > “Emails”, these are the setting options. Below is the default configuration but you can set each one to “never”, “only when away” or “always.”

The most important one is “Email me when I am quoted, replied to, my @username is mentioned, or when there is new activity in my watched categories, tags or topics”

If you have this set to “never” you will not receive our Announcement emails.
“Announcements” is set up as a watched category by default for all users.

For the other two options, “only when away” and “always” - Discourse has email suppression behavior where if you are checking the forum frequently, or you have it open in a tab that is pinging the site, you may not be sent the announcement because it’s trying to avoid duplicate notifications and assumes you are going to see it anyway.

Sorry for the trouble but that’s a glimpse behind the scenes that may explain for some why it didn’t go through.

Thanks for this post.

What’s weird is that I got the “Ghosts Batch 2 Pre-Order s Open - Batch 1 Sold Out” announcement, but I did not get the “Introducing Ghosts — (also Sparks + RIbbons orders are open)” announcement.

Fortunately, I was constantly refreshing and got a first batch Ghost (and Ribbons  ).

Any thoughts as to why I got one and not the other?

Probably because you were constantly refreshing the forum and Discourse considered you “active” at that moment.

Oh… I see that and it has sunk in now - thanks for (re)pointing that out!

I’m still a little loopy from all the excitement

Well, turns out I had gone in to update my email settings after missing the first batch and didn’t click “save.” My fault.
