I’m looking for a way to do a realtime reverse effect with Ribbons like what I can do with my Red Panda Tensor pedal - basically as long as the pedal is on, it is recording what I play, reversing it, and playing it back (mixed with the original signal). So far not seeing an easy way to accomplish that with Ribbons - the solution would seem to involve recording a loop first. Any ideas?
It seems like there is no way to get a realtime reverse effect from Ribbons, or at least I can’t figure it out, so I figured I’d post a feature request… I’d love to be able to have Ribbons capture what I’m playing and reverse it (without having to capture a loop first). I want to be able to blend the reversed audio in with the live audio, and also apply effects to it, like pitch/speed, wow, flutter, and tape crinkle. Thanks for considering this idea!
Not really possible without an extra touch mode, but the only approximation I can think of would involve the disintegration looper:
- Set the “volume decay” at its minimum, where it will be a one-repeat delay.
- Make a very short loop. (There needs to be a delay for “realtime” reverse effects because of the laws of the physical universe).
- Apply some kind of square wave modulation from an external source to the direction knob that will cycle between reverse and standard playback. Sync the timing of the square-lfo to the length of your loop.
Or just use your Tensor.
Or an OBNE BL-44 Reverse, which is doing exactly that: always listening, recording and playing backwards
Yeah, but i’m out of space on my board and was really hoping Ribbons could take the place of my Tensor and be my one “tape manipulation” pedal. Can’t gig without the realtime reverse thing the Tensor does though. Appreciate the ideas, @dickens
Nothing does what Tensor does because Tensor reacts to playing dynamics (and maybe other factors) to “choose” the best place to reverse (or stretch), which creates the illusion of real-time reverse.
That’s the pedal’s brilliance: adapting to create “sleight of hand” approximations of effects that are impossible.
But the entire pedal is designed around those algorithms. No doubt Jaak could do this, but doubtful that Ribbons has space for it. But who knows!
While the pedal does have reverse in looping, expecting it to have a real-time reverse when it’s not a stated feature is just 100% unrealistic.
That’s fine. I made another thread some time ago to request the feature, so we don’t need to keep going on this one.
did this ever come to fruition? I tried searching for the other thread @t-o-m mentioned but couldn’t find it. Seeing that theyre in stock now, I’m very curious about this. Thanks!
I guess this post is the feature request. I still think realtime reverse would fit right in with Ribbons’ other realtime effects, not sure why the idea hasn’t got traction.
