MIDI commands to Kinotone pedals from 1/8in TRS

Hey there

I’ve never used MIDI before, but I’d like to try to control ‘Ghosts’ using my Empress ZOIA, which can send MIDI messages from a 3.5mm TRS output.

I already have the DIN 5-pin (female?) to 1/4in TRS adaptor that’s listed on the Kinotone site, to plug into ‘Ghosts’.

Could anyone let me know if all I need now is a 1/8in TRS to DIN 5-pin (male) cable, to plug into ZOIA?

I’d love the answer to just be “yup” and we can all get on with our Kinotone-enriched lives, but if I’m mistaken, what additional equipment would I need?

Thanks so much  -Dave // 30 Circles

AFAIK, most DIN 5-pin to TRS cables follow the recommended MIDI standard – i.e., the TRS plug is wired Type A. If the adapter cable came with your ZOIA, you should verify that, since Empress seems to use the Tip Active Type. If you bought the cable on Amazon, Sweetwater, etc., it will likely be either Type A or Type B. The other common option is what the [EDIT] Ghosts Ribbons manual calls Type CBA (for Chase Bliss) who use the Ring Active type.

The good news is that, according to the Ghosts manual, the pedal works with either Types A or B, and it will automatically detect it. (My Ribbons on the other hand, defaults to Type A and you have to open the pedal to move a jumper to make it work with Type B or Type CBA cables.)

See: Ghosts User Manual - Kinotone

BTW, I get around the jumper business on my MIDI pedals by using a powered MIDI hub. Chase Bliss has their proprietary MIDI box, but there are other solutions out there such as Jet Pedals Traffic Control. Disaster Area has one too, but I have not used that one.

Thank you for your reply!

I bought my ZOIA second hand and it did not come with its own MIDI adaptor, so I have the luxury of ensuring I can buy a type A cable, such as perhaps this one, would this be adequate? Boss BMIDI-1-35 TRS/MIDI Cable – Thomann UK

Could you clarify what “jumper” business you’re referring to? I’ve never encountered this mentioned before, so just looking for potential pitfalls.

I’m just referencing the Ribbons manual, which says

Ribbons can manage 3 different types of TRS MIDI connections: Type A (factory setting) , Type B, or Type CBA.

If you need to switch types, you can move both jumpers on the inside of the device up or down , per the image below.

This, according to the Ghosts manual, is no longer necessary. Ghosts automatically detects which cable type you’re using.
