Chorus effect with wet/dry mix? (Ribbons)

Hi there, really enjoying Ribbons but have a question for the community/Jaak.

I know per the documentation the mix control was designed to avoid phasing issues.

But I’m getting extremely pronounced phasing running a dirty signal into Ribbons with wow/flutter, dropouts, etc enabled and the mix blended. I’m wondering if this is just the nature of those effects or if it could be rig dependent.

Thanks!

What you’re describing is actually expected behavior. When wow and flutter are enabled, they introduce a vibrato-like modulation. Blending that with a dry signal using the mix knob creates a classic chorus effect — that’s exactly what it’s meant to do. So in this case, the “phasing” you’re hearing is the intended result of those controls working together.

The note in the documentation about the mix knob “avoiding phase issues” is more relevant when wow, flutter, and dropouts are turned off. In those cases, the mix knob is designed to preserve clarity and avoid comb filtering, so you can dial in parallel drive or compression without the EQ getting weird. Think of it more as a tonal design choice for clean signals, rather than something meant to counteract modulation effects.

Hope that clears it up!

It does, thanks for clearing that up, Jaak, and for making such a fun pedal. I was surprised by the sound because I usually run chorus before dirt, but sure enough, it’s the same running dirt into a dedicated chorus. I’ll have to try running Ribbons into a mixer to blend some of the more wild effects with my dry signal.
