Here’s just a little noodle I made right after I got the pedal. I started with the “Lo-Fi Ambient” preset and adjusted to taste. Probably one of my favorite sounds right off the bat!

No audio available here, but once again Ribbons comes through - this live show setup involved multiple different Octatrack programs, which means: loading times. To smooth things out, I ran a slightly untuned AM radio through Ribbons’ Disintegration Loops mode and got some nice warbly background textures to fade up and down, pitchbend and reverse, while the Octatrack’s 13-year-old brain was doing its thinking.

I’m actually recording demos for a David Bowie cover band. For the song Little Wonder (from Earthling) i had to make a weird solo, and i made it with the “Broken Machine” mode and a few other parameters. You can hear it around 3’25. It’s weird yes (the preset is called “Jawas”)…

Mad a little jam featuring both Ribbons and Sparks! Ribbons is more obvious - providing all the tape filtering and artifacts, reverb, and tape stop to the chords that come and go throughout (which I’m creating on-demand by triggering the EHX Superego+ to send a note to Meris Hedra). Sparks is less obvious, but a little gain, and a subtle envelope on the filter cutoff to let that Ric tone cut through when I dig in.
If I’m ever forced to downsize the pedal collection, Ribbons and Sparks will be some of the only non-negotiable keepers!!

Recorded a little exploration during my first 24 hours with the Sparks, using the Ciat-Lonbarde Plumbutter. I particularly like what the wavefolder is able to do with the Deerhorn’s theremin.

So. For my new Bowie project i decided to go for a small board, but to include the Ribbons anyway. And i actively use it on 2 songs (and more to come).
The first use is on Heroes to help replicate the famous Robert Fripp drone sound. So here the use of Ribbons is quite subtle (you will see a much more dramatic use in a few days). I use magnetic dance to capture the first note and play it all along the song as a much needed support for the feedback (which is not always reliable). Here is the song :

Second song from the Bowie project where i use Ribbons live. Here’s it’s more “catchy” since it’s a whole solo done with the Broken Machine (around 3’20). I posted the demo of this song a while ago but here you can see it in live action. BM means that every solo is different and that’s funny ! With time i’ve learned to control it better but there are still surprises ! Enjoy !

Made a quick little pairing video of 2 different Sparks+Ribbons sounds as well as a comparison of compressor vs. saturation, since the new firmware allows a quick and easy swap of those two effects. Loved the compressor, but I really love the character the saturation can give.

Here’s a playlist of some tracks I have recorded with Ribbons and Sparks.
Beebo > Layers > Ribbons - Beebo is working as a drum machine here, with guitar and drums feeding into Layers and then into Ribbons using the Repeater touch mode.
Beebo > Sparks - Beebo is controlling Sparks’s internal synth, sending a sequence of notes; Beebo’s trigger module is sending a new note every time it detects an attack from the guitar. The triggering can get sloppy depending on how fast I’m playing. I had no way of knowing which note the synth was going to play, so harmonies are accidental.
Sparks 1-3 - My go-to sound with Sparks involves setting up the gate to work backwards, so the louder you play the more likely it is that the gate will kick in. When you play single notes, often it’ll clam up immediately, but if you play chords it won’t quite know what to do with them, so you get this crumbling, somewhat unpredictable texture. Sparks 1 is a pretty straightforward illustration of this. On Sparks 2, I added an LFO-driven filter sweep, kind of a rotating-speaker sound. And on Sparks 3 I pushed the LFO into the audio range and created a subtle drone to play against.

Hi Kinotone - I write music for film and TV. One of the projects I did in in 2025 was Do Not Attempt with David Blaine for Nat Geo (on hulu and disney). In the 4th episode which takes place in the arctic circle I sent my Rhodes through Ribbons’s Magnetic Dance (Rhodes through and insane amount of pedals is sort of my signature). After, I just cycled through all the chord variants for 8 beats each using the touch parameter. Then wrote an entire song (called cues in our world) around that. If you know the magnetic dance and you watch the episode you’ll know it when you hear it. It’s after the parachute scene, so… thanks for that. Also if anyone has the EHX 8 step program running that as the expression through the magnetic dance chord parameter is instantly satisfying.
I can’t wait to get my Sparks and Ghosts. My rule is that I always have to use a new piece of gear in a scene for my next project… to justify the purchase. haha. So I will be back to tell you where ghosts and sparks ended up.
